Day 322 (back-dated)

Spent some days out of town (after getting a negative covid test) for a family emergency.

When I got back I started filling in the days that I'd missed.

Day 316

A major reset today.  I changed the script that creates the tiles to calculate each one's average rgb value and save them.  And then wiped out the tiles and recreated a smaller subset, with just three tiles from each image.  And ignoring the rgb values, but still using just the mean tone to select the tiles.

Day 311

Redid the tiles to also break each image into quarters.  Increasing the tile supply five-fold.

Day 310

Changed the tile creating script to be able to create many more tiles from each image.  Not merely the three that I've been doing (original, normalized and inverted), but I could break the image up into sections, and create three tiles from each of those.  To start with, I merely recreated the 900 or so tiles that I'd made until the old scheme.  And will now start creating a second montage, using a photo of my face as a pattern.

Day 309

Changed the logic of for creating the montage.   Instead of sorting the pattern's rectangles and the list of tiles by value, and then assigning each tile to its corresponding position in the montage, it now finds the tile that best matches the value of the rectangle in the pattern.  Thus, many tiles get used multiple times, while others are not used at all.

And I noticed that most of the sketch that I'm using for a pattern is lighter than any of the tiles.

Virtual Sketchcrawl #12 - Winter - Empress Tree

I'd been thinking of sketching my own catalpa, because winter exposes its true nature, with branches chaotically strewing themselves every which way.  But from my windows on the first floor I can only really see its massive trunk, which doesn't change through the seasons.

So, when I realized that it wasn't going to be raining this morning, I decided to bundle up and walk to the MLC school grounds to do their empress tree instead.
