2nd Annual West Coast Urban Sketchers Sketchcrawl - South Park Blocks

Blisteringly hot.

Packed my tablet, sketchbook, water and hat and walked downtown.

Director Park

Summer Solstice

Cloudy and cool in the morning, turning sunny and warm.

Packed my phone and my tablet and walked downtown for this month's sketchcrawl, in Director Park, followed by lunch and the passing of books.

Hardly anyone did the fountain. Most did the construction and the giant chess game, and the surrounding buildings. I discovered that my stylus doesn't get along with the new tablet. It often doesn't register, or registers late. I ended up zooming in and using my finger, sucking up the battery.  And after a few tries came up with a 'workflow'.  I'd make a rough sketch in red, then add another layer and draw the real thing on top of that, then fade out the preliminary sketch.

New Nexus 7

After dropping my original on on a slab of concrete.
(and losing whatever unbackedup sketches were on it)

Nexus 7

Set off walking, stopping to catch a streetcar at Good Sam.  Shopped at the PSU farmers market, then sat down to try out my new tablet as a sketchbook.

First iteration of the Nexus 7.  The one without a rear-facing camera.
A 7” 1280x800 HD display.  With gorilla glass.   Oh joy!  No more worries about scratching the screen.

Seattle

Gray, but dry.  And well above freezing.

Start of Daylight Savings Time

Caught a ride to the UW with Rosh and Ginger, who were headed for the early church service. Then sat down in front of the Burke and made a sketch.

And found that cleaning the screen well doesn't prevent the stylus from scratching the screen guard.  Bummer.

It wasn't as cold as predicted, but it was still too cold to sit still for long, so I quit after the one sketch and headed over to the Ave and caught a 72 downtown, getting there in time to try a sketch of some of the old plasterwork in the station.

Tablet

Clear and cold.  Turning sunny and mildish in the afternoon.

Loaded my tablet in my bag and headed into town, picking up a latte on Thurman and dropping off a book and a movie at the library.  I stopped at Good Sam when I found a bench in the sun and tried a sketch.

It worked quite well.  One unexpected offshoot was that the stylus scratched the protective film.  I wonder if the disc has a rough spot on it.

Toshiba AT100.  10-inch tablet that I got refurbished and cheap.  A nice resolution of 1,280 x 800.  But despite that I bought it specifically for sketching, it's a bit big to drag around for long.
