Portland Art Museum

Today's assignment was to do shading with some pattern that we've never used.  In other words, not your usual crosshatching.  (Or in my case, no virtual paint.)  I picked out a brush that I seldom use and used it to do the shading in short parallel lines for the head of a Buddha.  The line as well, as well as I could.

Used a different brush to do a detail of one of the roadsters.  These lines were short of necessity, because that brush held only a small amount of pigment.

Mermaid Parade

...or at least, the milling around waiting for the parade to get organized.

Sketchcrawl - Rail Museum and Oaks Bottom

I grabbed an orange bike to get there, leaving it at the west end of the Tilikum Bridge so I could grab a coffee at Starbucks.  And found  a plethora of bikes there, with pods of orange Biketown bikes on both sides of the road.  And also Jump and Lime e-assist bikes.

Taking the bike had gotten me there way early.  Early enough to start with a sketch of the streetcar bridge over the RR tracks.
Headed towards the rail museum, looking for another sketch.  But found that the other sketchers were already collecting.  So I chatted for a bit, and then, leaning against the fence (with the westbound MAXes passing a foot behind my head) I did a car and caboose parked in front of the museum.
By the time that was done the museum was open.  We went in and browsed a bit, then most of us got on the excursion train to Selwood, leaving only Deb to work her way through the old engines being refurbished in the museum.

We put-putted our way down along the Springwater Corridor.  I honestly thought that it'd be faster to ride a bike, and wondered why none were passing us, before I remembered that the Springwater was closed this summer.  We all got off at Oaks Bottom, and I found my way into the amusement park.  And was drawn to their new roller-coaster, the Adrenaline Peak.
It's a short ride, but an intense one, with the passengers being shot up and down and around and twisting about in a corkscrew.

Wandered around a bit after finishing that.  There are picnics shelters, a beach, a dance hall and a roller-skating rink.  And I found the old roller-coaster, now used only by little kids and their parents.
We caught the 2pm train back to town, and then gathered in a new restaurant for a throw-down and a meal.  Kalina's John straggled in after an hour, having taken the next train after staying to sample the rides.  Yes, he had ridden the 30 seconds of hell.  And had spoken some rude words to it.

Monster Drawing Rally IV

This is the yearly party at the art museum, where scores of artists sit down in the courtyard and create artworks that are sold to support the museum's youth programs.

I started out just sketching the crowd, which means doing whichever person happened to be in my line of sight.

I noticed that many of the women were wearing little black dresses.  In fact, at least three of them were wearing the exact same little black dress, with a halter top tied in the back and a flouncy skirt.

There was also a Darth Vader-ish person.

He was actually much more intricate than I was able to get down.  Cause he got up and left, going out into the crowd.
The first shift was ending just about then.  I walked past the tables of adult artists, and found, in the sculpture garden, a model posing for a bunch of kids.

Lan Su Garden

I ran down to the garden on a bicycle, to try out a qigong class, and got there early.  So I tried a quickie while waiting for it to start.

Sketchcrawl in Ladd's Addition

Deb had organized an impromptu sketchcrawl for a visitor from Hamburg.  A few of us met in the coffee shop at the center of Ladd's Addition, and then scattered through the neighborhood.

I headed vaguely towards the south, where Deb had said there was an interesting church-like building with statues.  And found it.

I read the first part of the name as Greek characters.  But when I got home and asked google, it said that this was the "I AM" sanctuary.

Architectural Sketchcrawl

We actually all, more or less, sketched the same three buildings, starting with the Telegram Building.  Me, I didn't want to tackle the whole thing, so I just went for the tower.  (I keep thinking 'steeple'.)

Next was First Presbyterian.  Again, I wasn't going to do the whole thing, but found a different perspective.  I sketched Vicky sketching it, with a portion of it reflected in the empty storefront behind her.  And man! but that building has a lot of angles in it.  Then I did just the very tip of its steeple, with wispy clouds behind it.

Next was First Baptist.  I started walking around it, and hit upon doing the back door, tucked away in a corner.  (I think I may have used this door on the way out of a concert once or twice.)
